As the seasons change, the rhythms of farm life continue. After spending the summer months alongside their mothers, the new calves are now ready for weaning. Soon, they will be brought into our cattle sheds for the winter months, where they’ll stay warm and well-fed.
This summer’s dry weather has provided ideal conditions for preparing winter feed. We’ve managed to make an abundant supply of hay and silage to sustain our cattle, sheep, and goats through the colder months. Additionally, the harvest has yielded excellent quality straw, which will be used for bedding all our livestock. This ensures they remain comfortable during the winter, when outdoor grazing is less plentiful.
With autumn upon us, it’s also breeding season on the farm. Our Billy goat has been reintroduced to the nannies, as we prepare for the arrival of new kids. On the sheep side, we are in need of another ram to join our two existing boys. Together, they will be introduced to the ewes in November, setting the stage for a busy lambing season come April.
In line with our commitment to sustainable farming, we’ve made an important decision for next year. We will not be using any bought-in fertiliser. Instead, we’ll rely on farmyard manure produced right here on the farm, supporting both our livestock and the environment.
Meanwhile, the excitement of pumpkin season is in full swing! Pumpkin picking is well underway, and our poly tunnel is filled with lots of vibrant pumpkins. As they are gathered, it marks the beginning of a festive period on the farm, as we prepare to share the harvest with our community.
With the animals ready for winter and preparations for the next farming cycle in progress, there’s always something happening on the farm as we look forward to the changing season.
